CANNES FILM WINNER WAS INSPIRED BY ASKEATON FARM
LIMERICK POST FILM REVIEWER JOHN O' shaughnessy MET ASKEATON'S PAUL LAVERTY, SCRIPTWRITER FOR THE CANNES WINNER,
THE WIND THAT SHAKES THE BARLEY.
The extended Downey family from Askeaton have a very special reason for looking forward to the limerick screening this weekend of the award laden movie, the wind that shakes the barley.
the screenplay was written by their nephew, Calcutta-born Paul laverty, who, on his own admission, gained inspiration for his story from his school holidays spent on the family farm at creeves cross, Askeaton.
the wind that shakes the barley, directed by Scotsman Ken loach, and which relates how the volunteer guerrilla armies faced the ruthless Black and tan squads in the fight for independence, was the surprise winner of the premier award, the Palme d'Or, at the prestigious cannes film festival last month.
Paul laverty said he wrote about childhood memories of his uncle's farm in Askeaton. every year his parents sent him back to askeaton for his summer holidays.
the story he wrote is set in cork/Kerry in the 1920's. workers from the field and country unite to form volunteer guerrilla armies to face the black and tan squads shipped from Britain to block Irelands bid for independence.
the film opens this weekend around Ireland.
